In January 2022, Hello Tractor launched an innovative Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) financing product for tractors that finances community-based agents organizing farmers in their community to become tractor owners. This work has been largely supported by Heifer International who provided the initial $4,500,000 capital that has enabled us to achieve critical impact at scale.

Heifer International’s financing opened doors for us to launch new initiatives that are mission-critical to our goal of improving the productivity and income of smallholder farmers across Africa.
Setting Up Tractor Operator & Technician Training Programmes
We launched Tractor Operator & Technician training programmes to enhance the lifespan of tractors operating within African markets. The lack of professional tractor operators and technicians often leads to increased tractor downtimes and lost income.
Offering Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL) Financing for Spare Parts & Fuel
We also rolled out a buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) fuel and spare parts feature that will allow PAYG customers to receive financing for clean diesel and original spare parts to preserve the lifespan of their equipment.
Incentivising Behavioural Change & Enhancing Gender Inclusivity
We have increased gender inclusivity in agriculture. Before the launch of this financing scheme, just two women in our entire portfolio of 3,000 tractors on our platform owned tractors. Today, one-third of our PAYG customers are women.
Fostering the Adoption of Regenerative Agricultural Practices
We launched our first technology hub, equipped with climate-smart implements for rent. A quarter of our financed tractors currently offer regenerative agriculture services, and our goal is to continue to grow this number. You can learn more about this work via these news stories here and here.

The support we received from Heifer International has been catalytic in enabling us to secure commercial capital to scale our PAYG product across Nigeria, Kenya and Uganda. This will result in a tripling of the impact outcome. Some of our partners on this include:
